Views on higher education depend on political leanings, according to Pew survey

Views on higher education depend on political leanings, according to Pew survey”

"On balance, more liberal Democrats say the national news media has a positive (51%) than negative (39%) impact on the country".

As the graph above also shows, the opinion of higher education held by Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents has increased to 72 percent from 65 percent over the same time period, with less than two out of five believing colleges and universities have a negative impact on the country.

The Pew survey also found Republicans increasingly said colleges and universities have a negative impact on the nation (58 percent, up from 45 last year).

You can view the full survey findings here.

A majority of all Republicans-75 percent of those who identify as conservative Republicans and Republican-leaning and 68 percent of those who are moderate and liberal Republicans-said religious institutions have a positive impact.

White evangelical Protestant Christians were most likely (80 percent) to view religious institutions positively, along with majorities across Protestant and Catholic denominations, according to the study.

Republicans also have a more positive view of labor unions today, according to the survey, with 46 percent of Republicans responding that labor unions have a positive impact on the country, up six points since 2016. In September 2015, 54% of Republicans said colleges and universities had a positive impact on the way things were going in the country; 37% rated their impact negatively. TIt had a margin of error 2.3 percent.

Just checking in again: There's still a big partisan divide in the USA over what kind of impact the media has on the country.

- Among Republicans, or Independents leaning Republican, only 10 percent thought the news media was a positive force compared to 85 percent who rated it as a negative.

One institution that has been virtually unaffected by the political turmoil of the previous year, according to the survey, is church.

Others have come to the Democratic Party's defense, with one New Republic pointing out that the same 2012 convention had plenty of overtly Christian expression on the main stage and in the platform.
