Moscow shames USA for situation with Russian diplomatic compounds”

The Izvestia newspaper reported a Foreign Ministry source claimed Russian Federation is considering the expulsion of around 30 USA diplomats if the compounds are not returned.

Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the issue at the G-20 summit in Germany last week.

Moscow says a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minster Sergei Ryabkov and U.S. Undersecretary for Political Affairs Tom Shannon in St. Petersburg is the last chance to resolve the dispute, Kim reported.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow is mulling tit-for-tat steps in response to its seized diplomatic mansions in the United States.

If President Trump hands back the Russian diplomatic compounds seized by President Obama past year, he will cement his image of Kremlin stooge in the eyes of his opponents.

According to the newspaper, Moscow was driven to take such measures by Washington's decision not to return the Russian Embassy's property, which was confiscated in December 2016.

"We are forced to draw a line and answer in a similar way", Klimov told Izvestiya.

The Kremlin may expel dozens of American diplomats from Russian Federation and freeze some United States assets in response to its seized diplomatic properties in the US.

On December 29, 2016, the US expelled 35 Russian diplomats and denied Russian diplomatic staff access to the NY and Maryland compounds in what the then-US President Barack Obama called a response to the Russian government's "aggressive harassment of US officials and cyber operations aimed at the US election". The US closed Russian intelligence compounds in NY and Maryland.

Earlier, the newspaper said that the US dacha (summer house) in Serebryany Bor and a storage room in Moscow could be seized as part of the measures while Spaso House, the residence of the US Ambassador to Moscow, and the Ambassador's Anglo-American school in St. Petersburg will not be affected.
