Porte crashes spectacularly out of Tour de France”

Froome suffered a mechanical problem on the Mont du Chat, the last of three hors categorie climbs on the day, and as the three-time Tour victor was calling for the team auto Aru attacked in a clear breach of cycling's protocol.

Chambéry: Tour de France favourite Richie Porte has suffered a serious crash on the final decent of stage nine of the Tour de France. Briton Froome's four bonus seconds on the line helped him increase his lead to 18sec over Italian Fabio Aru, who moved up a place to second with Thomas having quit the race.

Thomas, who started the day second overall, had already crashed out 100km from the finish when Porte, who was fifth, slipped off the tarmac and onto a grass verge on the inside of a rapid descent.

He won stage one of this year's race and wore the leader's yellow jersey until Froome took it after stage five.

A stricken Porte was treated by doctors before being carried into an ambulance and taken to hospital, while Martin picked himself up and finished the stage despite going down for a second time.

"He was conscious, it's reassuring, he is being transferred to the hospital", Pommery said.

Thomas took a tumble on a damp descent of the Col de la Biche, the Welshman's fourth crash on this year's Tour and a repeat of his Giro d'Italia, in which his title hopes ended in a crash with a police motorbike.

Porte crashed on the descent from the Mont du Chat, the last of the day's big climbs, as he slid off the inside of corner and was violently flung across the road, with Quick Step Floors rider Dan Martin unable to avoid him.

Froome had his rivals - including Porte - to thank as the group neutralised Aru's attack while he was changing his bike on the lung-busting ascent to the Mont du Chat. Two-time victor Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) cracked on the last climb and dropped out of contention.
