Additional forces deployed in JK ahead of Wani anniversary

Additional forces deployed in JK ahead of Wani anniversary”

Wani, a commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter with Indian security forces on this day past year.

Almost 100 people died in the months that followed and many more were seriously injured in the eye from the pellet guns used to quell the protests.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Wani's first death anniversary on Saturday.

The separatist camp, including Hurriyat Conference factions led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Yasin Malik-led JKLF, has asked people to march to Tral, about 36 kilometres from Srinagar, to pay tribute to Wani, who was killed in an encounter with security forces on 8 July past year.

The Hizbul Mujahideen is believed to have spread the word across the South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian that it will carry out a recruitment drive in Wani's village on his death anniversary, according to The Times of India.

Currently, entire Kashmir is experiencing turmoil since April as clashes between civilians and security forces are witnessed in the Valley on a daily basis.

No pilgrim was allowed to move towards the valley from Jammu on Saturday as authorities said the ongoing Amarnath Yatra has been suspended for the day.

Shops and business establishments opened despite the day being Sunday while private and public transport services also resumed. The authorities are also likely to suspend mobile internet services across the Valley, it was learnt.

The BSNL's broadband service was resumed this morning, said the official, adding that all the social media sites were also working across all the platforms.

Keeping in view the call of separatists and UJC (United Jehad Council), all the preventive measures that are to be taken in all districts have started in terms of the preventive arrests of the miscreants or to ensure that no unlawful assembly takes place.
Police and paramilitary personnel fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Almost 20 persons, including five women, were injured when forces fired pellets at protesters in areas of Shopian.

They said that two persons were injured by teargas shells and the others by pellets.

Photo and video posts related to the martyred freedom fighter Burhan Wani in held Kashmir have reportedly been removed from Facebook and YouTube.
