Kentavious Caldwell-Pope now unrestricted as Pistons renounce rights”

Detroit Pistons guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, considered the Nets' second choice among this summer's crop of restricted free agents, became an unrestricted free agent on Friday after the Pistons renounced his rights.

Philadelphia would likely no longer be in the picture after signing JJ Redick to a massive deal.

The escalation of the Pistons' payroll would've made it impossible for them to match an offer sheet without shedding contracts. On the other hand, the thought of losing KCP in free agency wasn't a great alternative either as it would leave a hole in a team already barely on the fringe of the playoffs.

While picking up someone of Bradley's ilk could quiet naysayers, losing Caldwell-Pope after just four seasons is still a rather tough blow. The Wizards are expected to re-sign Porter.

As for Caldwell-Pope himself, he would give the Lakers a young knockdown shooter who would help space the floor and would fit well in the backcourt next to Lonzo Ball. Otherwise, one of the teams mentioned above could try and swoop in if he's impatient.

Caldwell-Pope was previously a restricted free agent, but with the Pistons hard-capped following the signing of Langston Galloway, they wouldn't have been in a situation conducive to matching a lucrative offer sheet for the 24-year-old wing. They accomplish that by swapping Bradley for Morris, but in helping the Celtics, the Pistons also helped themselves.
