Hawks won't match Knicks' $71M offer to Tim Hardaway Jr

Hawks won't match Knicks' $71M offer to Tim Hardaway Jr”

This will help them to bring on restricted free agent Tim Hardaway Jr., to whom they offered a four-year, $71 million deal on Thursday.

The 6-foot-5 Hardaway returned to the Knicks after two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks.

Although all four players will be of significance to the long-term vision, all eyes are on Hardaway Jr. and whether or not he'll be able to build upon his 2016-17 success.

It's a return to NY for Hardaway, who was the 24th pick by the Knicks in the 2013 National Basketball Association draft.

The Rockets have been persistent in their pursuit of Anthony, who is willing to waive his no-trade clause to join Chris Paul and James Harden in Houston, league sources told ESPN, and the Knicks do not imagine a scenario where Hardaway Jr.is sharing the floor with Anthony to start the season.

Hardaway, 25, returns to a Knicks franchise with significant hope that it can utilize his offensive abilities on the wing.

But the Knicks' big offer for a player they traded away surprised many, especially after the team had been inactive in free agent trading. It also includes an unusual provision requiring the team to pay 50 percent of Hardaway's annual salary by October 1 of every season, according to league sources.

Hardaway Jr, was a key member of the Hawks' playoff team last season, averaging 14.5 points per game after steadily improving in "Hawks University".

The move could mean the Knicks will strengthen their efforts to trade veteran star Carmelo Anthony. He'll space out as a shooter next to rookie Frank Ntilikina, but it's tough to imagine that NY couldn't have found another player for a much cheaper price.

Both of those trades were orchestrated by Phil Jackson, who was sacked by the Knicks. The club is looking for a veteran point guard to mentor rookie Frank Ntilikina but has limited resources to find one.
