Bethanie Mattek-Sands Suffers Brutal Knee Injury, Screams 'Help Me!' on Court”

Mattek-Sands, 32, was competing against Sorana Cirstea when she slipped on the court and screamed out in pain.

"Help me! Help me please!"

Cirstea jumped over the net to tend to her stricken opponent.

Believed by many to be a fairly common sporting injury - an ACL tear, her injury looks far more serious on inspection. "Fuck it hurts, fuck me it hurts". Have you given me any f***ing painkillers?

After being treated for 20 minutes on court, police cleared the corridor between Courts 16 and 17 and Mattek-Sands was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Please knock me out, please knock me out".

Mattek-Sands- who was born in Minnesota, lived in Wisconsin and now calls Arizona home with her husband Justin - thought about quitting tennis years ago after a series of injuries. "I'm going to kill you all".

Mattek-Sands was approaching the net during the third set before her leg gave out and she fell awkwardly in what was later revealed to be an "acute knee injury". "I guess the climate doesn't help, the fact that it's too nice, too hot, too sunny, makes everything very dry". Although the French player said she was not ready to retire just yet, she sat out 2007 and attempts to return in the 2008 season proved unfruitful. "Her knee was in a very weird position,"Cirstea recalls later of what she saw".

Cirstea told BBC News that she had never seen such an injury. "And, yeah, I panicked a little bit, as well", Cirstea said.

Wimbledon defended the response time of the medical team on Twitter, claiming that a "qualified ambulance technician" was on the court "within one minute".

Although it was unclear what role the surface played in Mattek-Sands's injury, many players criticized the court conditions on an unusually hot day.

Women's top seed Angelique Kerber won her second-round match in straight sets, as did fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 9 Agnieszka Radwanska.

She is now the No. 1 women's doubles tennis player in the world, which further adds to the cruelty of this injury.
