Utah Lawmaker Blames 'Treehuggers' And 'Rock-Lickers' For Wildfires

Utah Lawmaker Blames 'Treehuggers' And 'Rock-Lickers' For Wildfires”

Firefighters in southern Utah are in quite a battle these days.

Officials say that better weather conditions have limited the growth of a wildfire in Utah that has prompted the evacuation of 1,500 people from hundreds of homes and cabins.

While firefighters made good progress over the weekend, Monday saw winds of 30 miles per hour, which increased fire activity, according to Utah Fire.

Crews also just finished fighting a fire in Farmington and a fire at Long Ridge in Box Elder County, Curry said.

"They will be out helping suppress the fire, do mop up, control the fire line and do some structure assessment", Kelsey Griffee, fire prevention and information specialist, said.

Weather is aiding California firefighters battling a 700-acre (283-hectare) wildfire burning on the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and in neighboring San Clemente.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey plans to visit the area Thursday. "I've pulled out my family photos and important records and I know exactly what I have to grab if we have to leave", said Rice, who lives with her husband and her dog.

In Central California, a 2.5-square-mile wildfire that burned at least one building was 60 percent contained.

"When we turned the forest service over to the bird- and bunny-lovers and the treehuggers and the rock-lickers, we turned our history over", Noel said at a press conference this week.

Thick smoke from the Manzanita fire rises from the hills south of Beaumont on Monday, June 26, 2017.

The full extent of property losses has yet to be determined, said Tiffany Davila, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Forestry and Fire.

The fires are fueled by triple-digit temperatures and dry conditions.

Elsewhere in the West, a blaze burned in suburban Los Angeles, a complex of three major fires burned in Washington and more than 20 small lightning-sparked blazes were stopped in Idaho.

However, an emergency alert sent over cell phones late Monday telling people to "evacuate now" caused confusion as it didn't give a location for the evacuation order and according to social media, appeared to have been sent to some living as far away as Victorville, several miles from the blaze. "Drive safe in the burn area firefighters are working throughout the night".

"Firefighters are being directed to not put themselves in situations where the risks are high and probability of success is low", the Prescott National Forest said in a statement.

More than 100 residents were forced to evacuate their Santa Clarita homes Tuesday when a blaze threatened 80 homes in the Southern California town.

The state is expecting to face an estimated $7 million in damages caused by the massive fire. A fleet of helicopters dumped water on hot spots, while air tankers bombarded other flareups with tons of fire retardant chemicals.
