Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova celebrates with the trophy after winning the Aegon Classic final against Australia's Ashleigh Barty at Edgbaston Priory Club, Birmingham June 25, 2017.

Kvitova showed she will be a serious contender for a third Wimbledon title after beating Barty 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just her second tournament since returning from a knife attack injury.

Kvitova was playing only her second tournament and seventh match since she was attacked in December.

The 27-year-old will head into the third Grand Slam tournament of the season as one of the favourites for the title, with reigning champion Serena Williams taking time out from the sport to give birth to her first child, and last year's runner-up Angelique Kerber having a hard season.

This time, Kvitova stayed solid, and helped by two aces - the second one of set point - she took the set with a 6-3 score and forced the match into a decider.

"Both of us play really fast on this surface, the grass suits her game as well, so it was about a few points here in three, one or two key breaks in the match", Kvitova said.

"It is fantastic to see Kvitova back, and she is a weapon on grass, so hopefully I have nothing to lose in the final".

"I came here early and I have put in the hours and I feel I'm doing something good because I am winning", she said.

However she double-faulted twice when she was trying to close out the match at 5-3 in the second set.

Kvitova, 16th in the world, is looking forward to facing the 21-year-old Barty, ranked No. 77 and advancing to the biggest final of her career.

"I'm obviously I'm in a very different place".

"I am happy that I am in the final, but the way I am going is a bit weird". You know, Paris was a bit weird and unusual, and I couldn't play the best over there. "She's such an inspiration", said the Australian.

'I played unbelievably well. "I am happy that I am able to show good tennis here".

From the start Kvitova's serving was nearly always rock solid, finding the lines and the angles but with Safarova struggling to push off a heavily strapped leg there would have always been one victor. "I mean not just from my perspective, but I think from everyone, I think it's wonderful to have her back on the tour, and to be successful straightaway is just phenomenal".

After an exchange of holds, the Aussie found a chance to recover in the fourth game, when a huge error from the net from Kvitova gave her a break point. Broady commented on her speed not just laterally but up to short balls which she then just nails. "It's very frustrating because she was playing a great match". Barty has never played in a final on grass court.
