Names of jurors in Bill Cosby sexual assault case released

Alternate juror Mike McCloskey said Monday he was "ridiculously sick" when he found out the main jury couldn't reach a verdict.

The woman who took Bill Cosby to trial, accusing him of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2004, broke her silence Tuesday - three days after a judge in Pennsylvania declared a mistrial in the case.

The only criminal case in the country against the actor because of the Keystone State's longer-than-usual statute of limitations for sex crimes, Cosby's trial started on June 5 and ended June 12. Cosby's trial ended without a verdict after jurors failed to reach a.

Jurors asked to rehear lengthy excerpts of trial testimony but eventually told O'Neill they were hopelessly deadlocked.

"Jurors shall not disclose anything said or done in the jury room by any of their fellow jurors that may indicate his or her thoughts or opinions", O'Neill wrote.

Lawyers for news outlets argued at a hearing Tuesday that the names should nearly always be public to ensure transparency in the judicial process. A university staff memo sent to the curators says sexual assault allegations against Cosby are "incompatible" with the honorary doctorate in humane letters given to him in 1999.

The judge presiding over the Bill Cosby case ruled to release the names of the jurors Wednesday.

The news outlets argued the First Amendment provides a qualified right of access to jurors' names.

One man who served as an alternate revealed that the panel was spookily silent during the group's five-hour bus ride from suburban Philadelphia - where the trial took place - to the Pittsburgh area, where the jurors were selected, after the trial concluded.

Legal experts said it was rare for a judge to put conditions on what jurors can say after a trial has concluded.

"When we were selecting a jury, we were very adamant about their privacy", the judge said at the hourlong hearing. "I am eternally grateful for the messages I have received in recent days", Andrea Constand said in a tweet.

The names will be released once each juror has been informed of the decision, according to court staff. Despite that, Cosby's previous interviews with police, his deposition from Constand's 2005 civil case, and a taped phone call with Constand's mother were played in court.

The jury deadlocked after 30 hours of deliberations and there was no movement after that, the juror said, adding that the tension was heightened by the size of the tiny deliberation room. Cosby was in the courtroom every day but did not take the stand; Constand did, for almost 10 hours.

The Associated Press has tried to contact jurors for comment but hasn't spoken speak to any of them.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.

Judge Steven O'Neill declared a mistrial on Saturday after the jury deadlocked. They are interested in finding out how close the jury came to reaching a verdict.
