No need for alarm bells after draw, says Ronaldo

No need for alarm bells after draw, says Ronaldo”

Ronaldo scored twice and set up Silva's goal in the team's 3-0 win at Latvia in European World Cup qualifying last week, the team's last match before Sunday's Group A opener against Mexico at Kazan Arena. Host Russia tops the group with three points after defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup on Saturday.

Portugal's Ricardo Quaresma celebrates after scoring his side's first goal during the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match between Portugal and Mexico, at the Kazan Arena, Russia, Sunday, June 18, 2017.

"In the end it was a well-deserved result after how we played today", Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

45+1' - HERNANDEZ CHANCE - Vela scoots down the left, pokes an excellent pass inside for Jimenez. "We were always more risky than them, both in our organised play and on the counter attack".

"He is an example for us, the way he works, the way he plays", Patricio said.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said it was not the performance he expected from his team. We'll need players to cover both sides and we'll try to control the ball as much as possible.

In this photo taken on Tuesday, March 28 2017, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo controls the ball during the worldwide friendly soccer match between Portugal and Sweden at the dos Barreiros stadium in Funchal, Madeira island, Portugal.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player but he's not the only one. But yes, their transitions are very unsafe, like any team that plays with that system".

As man of the match, Ronaldo should have joined the managers in addressing the media; instead he failed to appear.

Prosecutors lodged a complaint at a Spanish court this month in which Ronaldo is accused of defrauding the Spanish treasury of €14.7million in tax owed on image rights. Portugal thought they had taken the lead just after 20 minutes when Pepe had the ball in the net after pouncing on a Ronaldo volley that had hit the bar, but it was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

But, just as sloppy defending had let Ronaldo in, Raphael Guerreiro's poor miscue led to an equaliser for Hernandez three minutes before half-time. Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela will be two Mexican players in focus.

The second half had little action until the final 10 minutes when, after goalkeeper Ochoa brilliantly saved Andre Silva's header, Soares' lung-bursting run into the penalty area saw him score with a huge deflection off Hector Herrera.

Chile's star player Arturo Vidal fiercely argued with referee Damir Skomina when a goal scored in first-half stoppage time by Eduardo Vargas was overruled nearly one minute later.
