Uber Board Member Apologizes for 'Disrespectful' Remark”

SAN FRANCISCO Uber director David Bonderman has resigned from the company's board following a remark he made during an Uber staff meeting Tuesday that was widely seen as offensive to women, according to a source familiar with the matter. The company has been working to improve its image and internal procedures, but in a meeting on Tuesday, one Uber board member said that women talk too much, creating yet another mess for a company that has been publicly battling accusations of toxic misogyny within its highest ranks.

Bonderman, 74 - chairman and founding partner of private-equity firm TPG - first issued an apology, calling his comments "disrespectful" and "inappropriate". Huffington was none to pleased, either, responding: "Ohh, come on, David".

"I take full responsibility for that", he said.

To the board and the wider company's credit, the joke apparently did not land at all in the meeting, which, just to reiterate, was about a damning report covering how the company has historically treated female employees like garbage.

His resignation from the board is effective Wednesday morning.

Huffington also addressed CEO Travis Kalanick's absence, telling employees he would be taking some time off due to the "confluence of recent events, the death of his mother, whom he buried on Friday, and all that the company has been going through in the last few months". Former Attorney General Eric Holder had been hired after blockbuster sexual harassment allegations by Susan Fowler, a former engineer, in February.

Huffington released a statement to the Times, insisting she supported Bonderman's decision to step down.

"We have been joined on the board by an incredible leader who also happens to be a woman", Huffington said in front of an audience of most of Uber's staff.

The comment quickly went viral on social media, provoking ridicule and disbelief as Uber's board scrambles to fix the fratboy reputation of its corporate culture under Chief Executive Travis Kalanick.
