Uber's Travis Kalanick may take break from company

Uber's Travis Kalanick may take break from company”

On Tuesday, Uber will report suggestions from a parallel survey regulated by previous U.S. Lawyer General Eric Holder.

According to a representative of Uber's board of directors, it has "unanimously voted to adopt all the recommendations of the Holder Report".

A major shakeup at the top right now could put Uber into a state of confusion, especially since the company's entire culture has been nurtured in the brash style represented by Kalanick's leadership. Emil Michael, Uber's chief business officer, is expected to announce his resignation on Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Sources told The New York Times and other media outlets that the board is meeting Sunday to discuss options pertaining to Kalanick, who co-founded the San Francisco-based technology company in 2009 and since has been on the driving seat to expand its operations worldwide. Now, the board of directors has to make a decision on how to responsibly manage the structure of a company that's privately valued at nearly $70 billion.

On the agenda at Sunday's meeting were a possible leave of absence for Mr Kalanick and potentially parting ways with Mr Michael. Uber executive Eric Alexander was sacked on 7 June for mishandling the medical report of a woman who was raped by an Uber employee in India in 2014.

Recode's report detailed how Uber was reportedly considering the prospect that the rape claim was concocted by rival Indian ride-sharing company, Ola, as part of a smear campaign.

The SVP of engineering, Amit Singhal, left Uber after it emerged he had not disclosed he had left Google a year earlier amid allegations of sexual harassment. On CNBC this week, Huffington said Uber was already "taking very strong measures to change the culture". And that's to say nothing of the personnel issues impacting Uber, including various sexual harassment accusations and a widely circulated video featuring CEO Travis Kalanick aggressively arguing with an Uber driver.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick built up the company into a household name valued at $68 billion.

One such employee, Susan Fowler, wrote an incendiary blog post in February on workplace conditions at Uber.

Some of the recommendations in Holder's firm's report would force greater controls on spending, human resources and other areas where executives led by Kalanick have had a surprising amount of autonomy for a company with more than 12,000 employees, one person familiar with the matter said. The Holder investigation is allegedly much more damning for the company.

Kalanick has been mainly on leave since a tragic boating accident almost two weeks ago killed his mother and left his father in hospital.
