National Spelling Bee gets down to final 4

Ananya Vinay after winning the Scripps National Bee 2017.

A $40,000 cash prize from Scripps as well as the Scripps National Spelling Bee trophy. Sometimes she would blurt out questions, with little intonation - "Part of speech?"

The second-place victor, 14-year-old Rohan Rajeev, misspelled the word "maraam" in the final round of the competition. She calmly nailed two words in a row, ending on "marocain", which means a type of dress fabric of ribbed crepe.

"But I'm kind of exhausted at the same time", Ananya added.

The country's newest spelling bee champ, Ananya Vinay, is very lucky that this word didn't come up during competition - because she can't spell it. "Do you know the word "covfefe"?"

Her win is also the first solo victory in three years as previous ones ended in a tie. The spelling battle between Ananya and Rohan lasted for almost 20 rounds. Her wins breaks a streak of three straight years of co-champions.

Ananya Vinay, 12, spelled "marocain" to win the 2017 National Spelling Bee.

After continuing the prank, Vinay gave her best shot at spelling the word, omitting a "v" from her attempt.

"I just focused on my word and tried to spell it right", Ananya said on "New Day".

The two determined spellers went back and forth for about 45 minutes, peeling off word after word in a tense competition of spelling prowess. She will return to present the award to the victor of next year's competition.

Whether or not this event is touted in the States, the US Scripp National Spelling Bee is making quite a headline today in India. Yep, they wanted her to spell the nonsensical word that President Donald Trump tweeted out earlier this week.

Fifteen aspiring spelling bee champions filled the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland on Thursday after advancing to the final round of the annual competition. Rohan, who was bidding to become the first victor from Oklahoma since 1965, won $30,000. Her mother, Lekshmi Nair, competed from 1988-1990 but never came close to the title.
