IMac Pro release date and details

The all-new iMac Pro, with its gorgeous 27-inch Retina® 5K display, up to 18-core Xeon processors and up to 22 Teraflops of graphics computation, is the most powerful Mac® ever made.

Featuring next-generation Intel Xeon processors up to 18 cores, iMac Pro is created to handle the most demanding pro workflows. It's not the most exciting of updates, with Apple instead touting reworked Mail and Photos apps and improvements to Safari, including autoplay blocking and intelligent tracking protection.

Apple today also updated the 13-inch MacBook Air® with a 1.8 GHz processor. Touch Bar-equipped 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models start at $1,799 and $2,399, respectively. We're looking at Apple's new iMac Pro starting at $4999. and scaling much higher than that if you pack it with all of the tech goodies you can imagine. Fusion drives are standard on all 27-inchers and SSDs will go up to 2TB at twice the current rates.

Configurations for the iMac Pro include up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory.

All that computing power needs copious interconnect bandwidth to communicate with the outside world, and Apple is delivering with four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a built-in 10Gb Ethernet NIC.

John Ternus, VP of hardware engineering, said the new iMac displays will be 43 percent brighter than previous models at 500 nits and be capable of showing one billion colors.

And, not surprisingly, most of the focus was on adding enough specs to make sure Macs can run VR applications for both consumers and developers.

All iMac and MacBook Pro updates are shipping starting today. There's a choice of new Radeon Pro graphics chips - the 570, 575 and 580 models - with up to 8GB of RAM.

Professionals will also welcome the adoption of H.265 with 40% better compression than H.264 - opening the door for better support for 4K content.

"The entry-level 21.5" model features an Intel Iris Plus 640 GPU while the 4K model now supports discrete AMD Radeon Pro 550 graphics with up to 4Gb of VRAM.
