Computex 2017: Microsoft teases mixed reality headsets and 'Always-Connected' PCs”

There was at least one partner missing from the announcements at COMPUTEX 2017 about the HMDs and that was 3Glasses a company I visited at CES 2017 and at Build 2017.

Microsoft is unveiling more of its range of Windows Mixed Reality headsets at Computex today. The ASUS headset, for example, features "a unique polygonal 3D cover panel" that can't be seen when the headset is worn.

So far, the only specification details we know about come from HP and Acer, the two companies that have made their headsets officially available for preorder.

Also showcased at the event were the latest collections in consumer, gaming, education and commercial devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba.

In addition, Acer will sell a $399 bundle later this year that contains their Mixed Reality Headset and the motion controllers. And like all mixed reality headsets for Windows 10, it features inside-out tracking, which negates the need for external motion sensors such as the HTC Vive's Lighthouse tracking system.

Because these headsets all conform to the Windows Mixed Reality standard, they are all universally compatible with the same VR software that's built-in to Windows 10, and they will work broadly with the same apps and games. Mixed reality has to catch up with VR when it comes to consumer awareness and Dell plans on doing that with its new stylish white headset which is designed by the same team that makes their premium XPS and Alienware PCs. Furthermore, it was revealed that Dell's headset will be available this holiday, with features such as comfortable cushions that can be replaced for a personalized experience, a weight balanced headband, cable routing, and a flip up visor. Microsoft didn't say whether this headset will be released in 2017 so it's quite possible that it may not arrive until next year. Acer ($299) and HP ($329) are now available for pre-order through the Microsoft Store for developers in the US (Acer, HP) and Canada (Acer, HP).

The tech giant also outlined key areas of focus to engage customers, increase momentum in the PC market with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and create new categories powered by Windows Mixed Reality. The company has been reluctant to confirm a release date, so experts believe the company will take its time to flawless the device.
