$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service

$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service”

Built at $3.8bn, the 1,172 mile and 30-inch Dakota Access pipeline runs through the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and IL.

Yesterday, June 1st, Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), the parent company of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) announced that DAPL is officially fully operational.

Both parts of the Bakken Pipeline system, including the Dakota Access, are now online and operating commercially, according to a new press release by the facilities' main owner, Energy Transfer Partners. Crude oil transported through the pipeline is sourced from six terminal locations in the North Dakota counties of Mountrail, McKenzie and Williams. It is capable of carrying 570,000 barrels of oil per day and is now transporting 520,000 per day.

"The commencement of Dakota Access will finally bring lower transportation costs to North Dakota producers", he said.

"We must not lose sight of why the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline began". More than half a year of protests in North Dakota resulted in 761 arrests.

The pipeline, which sparked a months-long protest by Native Americans and environmental groups, is 1,172 miles long.

"The reason we have regulations regarding trees and shrubs in North Dakota is that they're hard to grow, especially in western North Dakota", Commissioner Julie Fedorchak told reporters after the meeting.

Opponents said the pipeline's route under Lake Oahe near the reservation would threaten the tribe's drinking water, and the oil it carries would be destructive to the climate.

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the spill was quickly contained and cleaned up, and therefore did not represent a real risk to the environment.

"We will continue to battle the operation of this pipeline in court and remind everyone that just because the oil is flowing now doesn't mean that it can't be stopped". "The courts can stop it by demanding that the administration be held accountable for the full Environmental Impact Statement it initiated and then abandoned".
