Why the SEC passed the Malik Zaire rule”

Florida is now free to add a grad transfer this year, this after the SEC made a decision to change its grad transfer rule, which reduced the penalty from three years to one if the school does not meet certain academic requirements.

The Southeastern Conference voted on Friday to tweak a rule involving graduate transfers. Before the rule change, Florida was unable to add a graduate transfer because two of its previous transfers - Anthony Harrell and Mason Halter - did not meet all their academic requirements as graduate students.

The SEC announced on Friday that it has amended to its rules to graduate transfers.

In the immediate future, Florida stands to benefits the most from this new legislation.

"We did it a year ago with Austin and he came in and ended up helping our program", McElwain said Tuesday.

An approved rule change at SEC spring meetings could mean a Texas quarterback target is headed to Florida.

Coming off a 9-4 season and Outback Bowl victory, Florida returns redshirt junior quarterback Luke Del Rio, who went 5-1 as a starter past year before a shoulder injury ended his season.

Appearing in eight games last season, Zaire attempted 23 passes for 122 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. "Enough time has passed, it seems wise to step back and get in line with what other leagues are doing".

But graduate transfers were also a burr that annoyed Alabama coach Nick Saban last offseason. The league stepped in and granted Smith to a waiver to transfer to Georgia. "That's based on the knowledge that there's the opportunity for institutions to request waivers now under our current approach". "We've not now changed our policy, but it's one of those things that will be under discussion".

-Sankey said the league supports a concept identified by the American Football Coaches Association that would allow football players to play four games and not lose a year of eligibility. "The feedback this week was positive with still any number of question marks around the idea".
