Fugitive Cornered By Police On Queensland Property After Officer Shot Dead

Fugitive Cornered By Police On Queensland Property After Officer Shot Dead”

A gunman is believed to have shot dead a police officer after he opened fire when he was pulled over in a vehicle in Queensland on Monday afternoon.

A Special Emergency Response Team was sent to the scene at Seventeen Mile where police officer was shot.

It's understood another police vehicle rolled over after the chase resumed and the offender also fired at a police helicopter while entering a farm house.

Rick Maddison was declared dead this morning after he was shot dead by police.

Facebook Senior Constable Brett Forte was allegedly killed by Rick Charles Maddison, 40, as he tried to evade police.

Police said Maddison had a long and violent criminal history.

Earlier today, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the aim was to negotiate with Maddison, who is wanted by police on multiple domestic violence and weapon charges.

Flowers are being left outside a Toowoomba police station in honour of Senior Constable Forte.

"The male person who is the subject of our inquiries in relation to the death of Senior Constable Brett Forte has exited the building in which he was in", said Mr Wright.

A siege in Australia involving a man suspected of killing a police officer on Monday has stretched into a second day.

"He has been challenged by police at that point in time; he has fired at those police", he said.

Police overnight were negotiating with a gunman holed up in a farm house.

"I know was it was completely unexpected and Brett sadly never had a chance", Queensland Police Union chief executive Ian Leavers said.

Much is often said about the difference in police use of force in the United States and other countries, including Australia.

Police have cordoned off a large section of the area, forcing some locals to sleep in their cars.

Police sources confirmed the officer had died.

"It is devastating for officer's family, his colleagues and his community", she said.

Snr Const Forte was part of Toowoomba's Tactical Crime Squad and worked with Queensland Police for about 15 years.
