Home National India's longest river bridge opens, improves connectivity between Assam”

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated India's longest bridge - the 9.15 km long Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the River Brahmaputra, in Assam on May 26.

He said it would speed up development in both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam states and help tens of thousands of farmers gain access to new markets.

"The shortening of distance by 165 km, reducing travel time by 7-8 hours will open new doors to economic development", he noted.

On this occasion, PM Modi said, "You have been waiting for this bridge for the last five decades, today you have got it".

Modi said the bridge will lay a new beginning for economic revolution not only for the region but the entire country.

Speaking at Guwahati, the Prime Minister said that there was a time when people talked only about "Kala Dhan" (black money) but under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, people are talking about "Jan Dhan" the government programme for opening zero balance accounts for the poor.

Addressing the nation here on completion of third years in the office by the BJP-led government, Modi pledged to set up a "class less society" in the country where people from all walks of life would be living with dignity and dignity of labour would be respected most.

"We have to march ahead and we are not talking about a second Green Revolution, but Sada kal harit kal - Green Revolution always and for this, we are committed to modernise agriculture sector by adopting a holistic approach", he said. Had Atalji won the elections in 2004 again, the bridge would have been completed ten years back, ” Modi said. Earlier, the only way to cross the Lohit river was by ferry, and that too only during the daytime.

As the the bridge improves the road connectivity, it will also increase tourism now, as it will be easier for tourists to visit the famous Kamakhya Temple. Only the Indian Government is the one which honours Indian artists.

Former Major General and security analyst Dipankar Banerjee says that in the past it was felt that "close to the border if you built roads, then it could perhaps be used for offensive goal by either side. New waterways will start from here", the prime minister said.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chouna Mein, Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain, State ministers Parimal Shukla Baidya, Pallablochan Das, MPs Pradan Baruah, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Rameswar Teli, Sadiya MLA Bolin Chetia and State Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia attended the bridge inauguration ceremony.
