Security Concerns Mount At Phoenix Comicon After Attendee's Arrest

Security Concerns Mount At Phoenix Comicon After Attendee's Arrest”

A day after a man was arrested at Phoenix Comicon for allegedly threatening officers and carrying a bag of guns into the convention, security has been dramatically increased at the event. He was taking photos of officers and posting them online, Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said.

The tipster provided police with the location of the suspect and his description.

Phoenix police say there are indications an armed man arrested at Phoenix Comicon is mentally disturbed and that he told detectives he's a crime-fighting comic book character and planned to shoot bad police officers.

Phoenix Comicon is now taking place through May 28 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona. "This includes costume props for staff, crew, costuming groups, panelists, and participants in the masquerade ball".

He was taken into custody without incident after a brief struggle with police at the Phoenix Convention Centre. Police said no prop weapons will be allowed at the event, which began Thursday.

Exhibitor Hall vendors will still be selling props and simulated weapons. However, this did not seem to occur on Thursday, with the armed man slipping through into the convention while fully armed.

Phoenix PD said that no evidence had been found to cause investigators to believe the arrest was part of any "grander scheme" and listed it as an "isolated incident". Should convention and event attendees in the United States be concerned that they might be next?

Police said there will be more intensive screening to guard against any other weapons getting inside the event, which will likely slow down entry lines into the event.
