U'khand landslide: Thousands stranded, restoration on”

Although no casualties were reported, nearly 15 thousand tourists are stranded.

Chief minister Rawat said the route would be opened on Saturday as the Border Roads Organisation and other authorities were clearing the debris.

Gopeshwar: The Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway was closed on Friday near Vishnuprayag in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district due to a landslide, following which hundreds of pilgrims were feared stranded at different places here.

President Pranab Mukherjee had visited the Badrinath shrine, the last Char Dham shrine to be opened this year, on 6 May.

State chief minister Trivendra S Rawat said the affected road would be reopened by Saturday.

The Railway administration has made arrangements to bring them back to Maharashtra, Fadnavis said.

In the afternoon, landslides occurred here after huge boulders rolled down the Hathi Pahar mountain. The situation is completely under the control of the government.

The Secretary of the Natural Calamities Department said that all the people were safe and that there was nothing to worry about. Earlier, Press Trust of India had reported that around 2,000 were stranded after a landslide in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. The pilgrims who were on their way to Badrinath, are being stopped at Karnapriyag, Nandprayag, Pipalkoti, Joshimath and Chamoli. Meanwhile, Joshi refuted the reports claiming that around 15,000 people are stranded due to the landslide. Officially, however, the number was fixed at 5,000 as many bodies were lost in the deluge.
