Samsung showcasing stretchable OLED display this week

While not as known as CES, SID, or the Society for Information Display, has its own trade show this week to show off the advances in consumer display tech.

As per the industry watchers, the sales of the global flexible display market would rise from the 3.7 billion a year ago to a staggering $15.5 billion in 2022.

When pressed, the stretchable OLED display can move up to 12 millimeters in a direction and then settle when released - like a balloon - while retaining a high degree of resolution.

It's being reported in Korea today that Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics has recently signed a deal with Apple to supply OLED panels for the new iPhone next year, tentatively called the iPhone 9.

Already several companies have filed patents regarding stretchable and bendable display technologies. At this time, it is probably very expensive and complicated to produce stretchable displays in larger sizes.

Samsung to unveil a stretchable display that will make broken smartphone screens a thing of the past. Other advanced display technologies by LG Display include its 65-inch UHD Crystal Sound OLED that brings sound directly from the panel and its 55-inch full HD (FHD) transparent display. "Market growth could also accelerate when flexible displays debut in foldable, rollable and stretchable forms", Jerry Kang, principal analyst at IHS, said earlier.

The display technology, however, is still in its nascent stage and may go through more research and development before it is commercialised. The firm has prepared a 5.09-inch prototype for this display technology. The ability to bend in more than one direction opens up new applications and additional use-case scenarios for devices that might implement such a display.

However, reports claimed in January that the long-rumoured 'Galaxy X' (aka Project Valley) foldable smartphone/tablet will be launched in the third quarter this year, quite possibly at the IFA trade show in Berlin this September.
