Deportation protection for Haitians extended 6 months

Deportation protection for Haitians extended 6 months”

In a press statement, Kelly noted that country conditions in Haiti have been improving since the 2010 natural disaster that led to the TPS designation.

"Extending temporary protected status for Haitian nationals living in the United States is the right decision, both morally and economically", Murphy, whose Orlando-Seminole County-based district is home to many Haitians, said in a release.

Haitian community members joined in prayer with lawmakers - including state Representative Dan Cullinane, state Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, and state Representative Daniel Cahill - last week at a Haitian Heritage Day event at the Massachusetts State House.

Haitian participation in the program has been regularly renewed for 18-month intervals and the latest extension expires in July. "Six months from now, we'll be facing the exact same situation".

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials announced the extension of so-called temporary protected status (TPS) on Monday. The officials briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity despite President Donald Trump's insistence that anonymous sources shouldn't be trusted.

Immigration advocates hoped the government would extend the status for another 18 months because Haiti, a country still reeling from Hurricane Matthew a year ago and the aftermath of the 2010 quake, which devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince and killed more than 200,000 people, is not ready to take back tens of thousands of people. Haiti has experienced an epidemic of cholera introduced to the country by United Nations forces brought in to help after the quake.

Earlier this month, in the ramp-up to tomorrow's decision, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services began gathering data about criminal histories of Haitian immigrants and whether Haitians enrolled in federal programs are receiving benefits they are not eligible for. "Haiti right now is not a good place to send people back". Even more significantly, several of the larger camps were reclassified by the Haitian government as "permanent housing", simply because the residents had attached so much salvaged building material to their shanties.

"After careful review of the current conditions in Haiti and conversations with the Haitian government, I have chose to extend the designation of Haiti for Temporary Protected Status for a limited period of six-months", said Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. "I had a community activist say to me last night: If every musician did what Wyclef did last night, we would be so far ahead in this campaign for TPS renewal".

The Trump administration filed court papers Monday aimed at getting a judge to reconsider his ruling blocking the president's executive order to cut funding from sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with US immigration authorities.

A DHS spokeswoman previously told the Observer that Kelly has to make a decision on the expiration or extension of TPS by May 23, to allow 60 days for official notification through the Federal Register, the daily publication for rules, notices of federal agencies and organizations, executive orders and other presidential documents.

The Haitian-American community, lawmakers and the Haitian government have urged the Trump administration to leave the protections in place, saying the country is still not ready to take back immigrants who have been living overseas.

But Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., says Haiti is still struggling.

Officials said Kelly chose to extend TPS based on current conditions on the ground.

"I hope they help my parents and they keep me here", Bastien said before hearing that the TPS program had been extended.

"Today's decision to provide a six-month grace period from deportation for more than 58,000 Haitians is a welcome but temporary solution, and it falls woefully short of what is needed", she stated in a release.
