Trump pledges to move quickly to name new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Trump pledges to move quickly to name new Federal Bureau of Investigation director”

The Republican senator said Sunday that Trump should stop publicly commenting on the investigation following the President's firing of former FBI Director James Comey, which he subsequently tweeted about throughout the week.

For a president whose tweets frequently rattle Washington - and foreign capitals - Trump's message early Friday morning was particularly jarring: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" the president wrote.

Asked if the pick would be announced before his trip overseas, Mr. Trump said, "Even that is possible".

"I think we ought to get to the bottom line here: President Trump is unsafe". "They've been vetted over their lifetime essentially". He dismissed as less desirable at least two of the 14 candidates under consideration by Trump, former Rep. Mike Rogers of MI and Sen.

Allies and former employees of Mr. Trump have long said that he taped some of his own phone calls, as well as meetings in Trump Tower.

The president told Lester Holt on Thursday that he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of what top Justice Department officials had to say about the decision.

The first candidate has already been interviewed.

The US President told reporters "we can make a fast decision" and that it was "possible" it could be by Friday.

In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the former prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY called Comey a "highly professional and ethical person".

Mr Trump told NBC news he had asked Mr Comey whether he was an Federal Bureau of Investigation target, twice over dinner and once over the telephone.

Cornyn, the Senate majority whip, is the second-highest ranking Republican in the chamber, meaning his possible appointment would trigger political moves both there and in his home state of Texas.

Two senior Democrats want Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to resign if he declines to install a special prosecutor to lead the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"No, I didn't, but I don't think it would be a bad question to ask", the president told Pirro.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe was also interviewed, despite his repeated willingness to break from the White House explanations of Comey's ouster.

Fisher formerly served as assistant attorney general for the US Justice Department's Criminal Division.

USA intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign of interference in the election aimed at tilting the vote in Trump's favor.
