David Ayer In Early Talks To Direct 'Scarface' Reboot

David Ayer In Early Talks To Direct 'Scarface' Reboot”

David Ayer is in early talks to direct and write Universal's "Scarface" remake, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

The film has been slated for a 2018 release and originally had Antoine Fuqua in the mix to direct. Fuqua, however, left the conversation due to scheduling conflicts.

According to the report, this remake will take inspiration from both previous Scarface movies but will be set in Los Angeles instead.

Ayer is now putting the finishing touches on his Netflix film Bright, which stars Will Smith. Despite Ayer most recently being known for Suicide Squad, he does have some experience with crime dramas with movies like Street Kings and End of Watch. It is unknown if his commitment to Scarface will effect his work on DC Films' Suicide Squad spin-off Gotham City Sirens.

Ironically, the only thing giving anyone any hope for this project is the fact that Universal gave the script over to several other writers following Ayer's initial draft, and the version that will now purportedly be shot by Ayer was crafted by none other than the Coen brothers.

Diego Luna is now attached to star with the latest draft of the script penned by The Coen Brothers. Dylan Clark will produce via his Dylan Clark Productions, along with Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 Scarface film. It's the second remake of the immigrant drug lord classic: The first version of the film debuted in 1932, and was remade in 1983 by Brian DePalma, starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.
