The Difference a New Administration Makes: Immigration Arrests Spike Under Trump”

The number of people arrested by USA immigration agents rose by almost 40 percent in the first 100 days since President Donald Trump took office, according to government data released Wednesday.

Homan did not say how numerous 41,318 people whose arrests were announced Wednesday have been deported, remain in custody or have been released.

The March 9 arrest in DeKalb, Georgia, of Jose Mercedes Meza-Ignacio, 52, a citizen of Mexico residing in Atlanta, wanted on criminal charges for child molestation.

Immigration officials pointed Wednesday to a steep jump in arrests during President Trump's first 100 days, citing recent captures in Texas and NY of reputed members of the notorious MS-13 street gang as examples of risky criminals detained since February.

Arrests of immigrants suspected to be in the US illegally soared in the early months of the Trump administration, in part because of a surge in the detention of immigrants who have no criminal convictions, officials announced Wednesday.

From Jan. 20 to April 29, 2014, for example, ICE officers detained 54,584 people, about 27 percent of whom were non-criminals.

"These statistics reflect President Trump's commitment to enforce our immigration laws fairly and across the board", ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan said in a statement from the agency.

This week, the House Judiciary Committee will take up a bill to improve the interior enforcement of our immigration laws to prevent criminal aliens from roaming free in our communities.

The agency said close to three-fourths of those arrested nationwide had some kind of criminal conviction. They made up about one-quarter of the total arrests.

Homan said "all of those arrested will receive the due process afforded to them under the law".

Such cities limit their cooperation with federal authorities who enforce immigration law, including possibly not honoring immigration detainers placed on people in jail who commit unrelated offenses.

The ICE and CBP Body Camera Accountability Act and the ICE Body Camera Act would require immigration, customs and border patrol agents to wear and use body cameras during field operations, and make footage available for use in court.

The ICE arrests of undocumented immigrants in the Denver area has drawn the attention of city and state leaders alike.

"ICE is firmly committed to the health and welfare of all those in its custody and is undertaking a comprehensive agency-wide review of this incident, as it does in all such cases", the agency said. "If we don't take action on those orders, then we're just spinning our wheels, aren't we?"
