Comey documented Trump request to drop Flynn investigation in memo

Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation.

A small number of FBI agents were made aware of the memo and the conversation, and agents kept working on the investigation.

Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey that Mr. Flynn had done nothing wrong, according to the memo.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said in a tweet that he has his "subpoena pen ready".

Comey "needs to come back before the Congress", Schiff said, and "share with the public what conversations he had with the president" - including whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation in any way.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", the President said to Mr Comey during that meeting, according to the memo.

May 3, 2017: Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Comey insists he was consistent in his handling of the separate investigations into Clinton and Trump.

An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on the existence of any contemporaneous memo written by Comey following his February 14 meeting in the Oval Office.

Comey was abruptly fired May 9 and learned of the dismissal as he was giving a talk in Los Angeles. "Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russian Federation to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism". "While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", a White House statement said.

The FBI has been reviewing Flynn's contacts with Kislyak prior to Trump's inauguration, in which he discussed sanctions the Obama administration imposed on Russian Federation.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his decision to disclose information to Russian officials during a White House meeting last week, saying he had an "absolute right" to share "facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety".

May 16, 2017: A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Comey wrote a memo after the February 14 meeting with the president that said Trump had asked him to shut down the FBI investigation into Flynn.

"Obviously, we want a briefing from the White House", said House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., "I don't know that it's important to have Comey testify, but it is important to get to the bottom of it. So that alone sometimes calls into question nearly all of these discussions", said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. "And I hope that we can get Comey to come up here and testify".

Graham also said he would consider a special prosecutor if Comey's recounting of the meeting was accurate.

"Concerns about our national security, the rule of law, the independence of our nation's highest law enforcement agencies are mounting", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor shortly after the Times story broke. At best, President Trump has committed a grave abuse of executive power.

Some Democratic lawmakers and former intelligence officials warned that, depending on what exactly Trump told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, the lives of those gathering the intel provided by Israel to the US may now be at risk. I say to all of my colleagues in the Senate: "history is watching".
