Too much caffeine led to heart problems that killed SC teen”

A 16-year-old boy died from a caffeine overdose after drinking caffeine-laden soft drinks, coffee and an energy drink, a SC coroner said Monday.

According to the State, after Davis drank a large Diet Mountain Dew, a McDonald's latte, and an energy drink within a two-hour period, he collapsed in class.

The final drink is believed to have caused the cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) which led to his death an hour later.

Davis' father, Sean, who said he was "brokenhearted" by his son's death, appealed to parents to "talk to your kids about the dangers of energy drinks", and pleaded with young people to "stop buying them". "He was totally against drugs, he was totally against alcohol". We worry about their safety, their health, especially once they start driving.

"We're not trying to speak out totally against caffeine", Watts said.

The excessive intake of caffeinated drinks had caused Cripe to undergo a medical condition known as arrhythmia, which results in abnormal heartbeat, lack of blood circulation and ultimate shut down of brain, heart and other vital organs of the body.

Watts said Cripe was considered a healthy teenager and did not have an undiagnosed heart condition.

Cripe may have had the same amount of caffeine on another day and been all right, Watts said.

He also urged people to avoid highly caffeinated drinks. But it wasn't a vehicle crash that took his life. "They can be very risky". "You can have five people line up and all of them do the exact same thing with him that day, drink more, and it may not have any type of effect on them at all".

"The objective here today is not to slam Mountain Dew, not to slam cafe lattes, or energy drinks".

While caffeine does affect everyone differently, nutritionist Zoe Bingley-Pullin told Harper's BAZAAR Australia, "New research shows that having up to 400 mg of caffeine is safe, but I don't believe that personally". McDonald's does not report the amount of caffeine in its coffee.
