Si Woo Kim statement

Si Woo Kim statement”

Kim has played in 19 events this year. Europe's Ryder Cup talisman is back in the big time but Poulter being Poulter even the resurrection at the Players could not pass off without sparks flying.

Englishman Ian Poulter (71) bogeyed the last after shanking his second into a bush and finished tied for second with South African Louis Oosthuizen on seven under.

"Sorry to disappoint, I can only dream of being as good as Brandel", he wrote.

Poulter is poised to hand an immediate boost to the European Tour by entering the PGA Championship at Wentworth next week. But Kim's shot was ideal and rolled right onto the front of the green.

"If you're on your game and playing well, that the things you do", Oosthuizen said. If you can do that around this golf course, you can outscore everyone.

The excitement, good and bad, came from everyone else.

Elsewhere at Sawgrass on Sunday there was drama as Rafa Cabrera Bello scored a rare albatross.

But he admitted to gaining confidence as the day wore on - especially after he took the lead for good with an 18-foot birdie putt at the ninth.

The other co-leader was J.B. Holmes, and it was a horror show for the Kentuckian.

Then Kim parred his way through the back nine, his last putts no longer than four feet on any hole as he calmly ignored winds and tension to prevail. Defending champion Jason Day made a quadruple-bogey 9 at the par-5 16th hole, hit his tee shot at No. 17 into the water, and limped home with an 80 to tie for 60th and kept up the streak of no back-to-back champions.

For those trying to catch Kim in The Players Championship, and for thousands of fans who anticipated the drama this tournament so often delivers, the infamous par-3 17th hole with its island green represented the best chance that the pressure might finally get to him.

He then pointed out that Chamblee, who boasted earlier this year about all the folks he had blocked on Twitter, had done the same to him.

As for the victor?

Si Woo Kim may have just announced his name on the world stage by winning the Players Championship, but that could be the last we'll hear from him in a while. This victory comes with perks beyond the $1.89 million first prize.

Kim is the first victor on the tour to go bogey-free over his last 18 holes since Jordan Spieth earlier this season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the first Players champion to do so since Tim Clark in 2010.

Kim's triumph saw him replace Australia's Adam Scott as the youngest ever victor of the Players Championship, which is regarded as golf's unofficial fifth major.

Kim, who won his first PGA Tour event in August in Greensboro, North Carolina, joined Sergio Garcia of Spain as the only golfers born outside the United States in the post-World War II era to have recorded two Tour victories before their 22nd birthdays. That card effectively went to waste, and Kim spent the next two years on the developmental tour until earning his card back to the big leagues. Never a long hitter off the tee, Kim hasn't been hitting fairways (.550, 178th on the Tour), greens (.589, 201st) and when he did finally manage a way to get to the green, he wasn't sinking much, buried at 176th in the Tour's strokes-gained putting index.
