Trump threatens to cancel briefings; Spicer back at podium

Trump threatens to cancel briefings; Spicer back at podium”

This talking point - that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said there was "no evidence" of Trump campaign-Russia collusion - was debunked during a Senate hearing on Monday featuring testimony from Clapper and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

Days before he was sacked by Donald Trump, FBI Director James Comey requested more resources to pursue his investigation into Russia's election meddling and the possible involvement of Trump associates, USA officials say, fueling concerns that Trump was trying to undermine a probe that could threaten his presidency.

Trump was asked what should be done about his press team being unable to keep up with him.

He was responding to questions on his early morning tweets in which he had mooted the idea of doing away with the daily press conference, a decades old tradition at the White House.

Begun formally during the Woodrow Wilson administration, the briefings are now typically held daily by the White House press secretary or deputy press secretary.

"I think it's pretty simple, I hadn't had a chance to have the conversation directly with the president", she said.

A spokeswoman for President Donald Trump is suggesting that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a memo justifying FBI Director James Comey's firing, be selected to take over the Russian Federation investigation.

At the briefing Friday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer - whose job Trump told Fox News Channel was safe amid reports that it might not be - avoided directly discussing Trump's threat to cancel the custom, saying only that Trump was "dismayed" with the news media.

"We want this to come to its conclusion, we want it to come to its conclusion with integrity", said deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders, referring to the FBI's probe into Moscow's interference in last year's election. To get back to his office, Spicer would have to pass a swarm of reporters wanting to know why President Trump suddenly chose to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director. "Any investigation that was taking place on Monday is still taking place today", she said.

Spicer was back to answering questions Friday about Comey's firing.

That led Trump to tweet, 'As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy'.

The White House first said this week that Trump sacked Comey because of a negative memo about him from the Justice Department, only to have the president later say he made the decision before seeing the memo, resulting in considerable media discussion.

Rather than talk with Comey - "man to man", as President Trump would probably characterize it - the Federal Bureau of Investigation received an email notification, and Trump sent his longtime bodyguard over to their headquarters with the official paperwork. And the big question, one source said, is whether it's temporary or permanent.
