Nigeria presidency releases names of 82 freed Chibok girls

Nigeria presidency releases names of 82 freed Chibok girls”

Nigeria's government rebuffed criticism by a faction of the former ruling party that it should not have made an exchange for the girls' release, along with other criticism that it waited too long to take such action.

Presidential adviser Femi Adesina said: "The president was delighted to receive them and he promised that all that is needed to be done to reintegrate them into the society will be done".

Now in its eighth year, Boko Haram's insurgency has sought to create an Islamic caliphate in northeast Nigeria, as well as in the bordering regions of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Adesina also said that there's no need to worry about the Boko Haram terrorists who were freed to secure the girls' release.

The 82 schoolgirls released by Boko Haram Islamist militants have met Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

The return of the 82 girls on Saturday marked the second group release of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram - with both deals brokered by Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross - after 21 young women were released in October.

Photos released by the government Sunday showed the rail-thin president addressing the Chibok schoolgirls at his official residence Sunday evening, a day after their release.

It was unclear if numerous parents in the remote northeastern town of Chibok had seen the list of names or if any would travel the almost 900 kilometers (560 miles) to the capital of Abuja to see their daughters who were abducted by the Boko Haram militant group. The president expressed his deep gratitude to security agencies, the military, the government of Switzerland, the Red Cross, local and worldwide NGOs for the success of the operation.

Buhari said last month that the government was in talks to secure the release of the remaining captives.

"Unfortunately, when they were brought back, the Federal Government didn't give us access and we said that was okay, all we wanted was access between the girls and their parents".

Are they back at home?

. Others have escaped or been rescued, but 195 were believed to be still in captivity before this release.

"A lot of factors come into play when a nation has to decide whether or not to engage in prisoner-hostage swap", he said.
