Cochrane High grad shares story of mental illness”

Together, these efforts address the vast societal and business costs of mental health conditions, which are projected to drain $16 trillion in economic output by 2030.

A report from the CIPD, showed that the number of people that have experienced mental health problems at work has grown from a quarter to a third over the last five years.

Cheshire Constabulary senior HR manager Jo Jones, who is taking part in the walk, said: "The aim is to get our colleagues and the public talking about mental health".

"For the 10,000 mothers that will not fit Maternal Mental Health criteria this year to receive funded holistic treatment for perinatal depression, and the 7,500 mothers that will experience a significant delay in diagnosis this year - this would be a welcome Mother's Day present that they desperately need".

"If you are experiencing a mental health problem like depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it is possible to feel a sense of unreality and removed from your day-to-day life", explains Lyus.

"With this in mind, HR strategists should look at ways to foster a culture of openness which actively encourages staff to share their needs on an ongoing basis so that they can be fully supported". Mental health conditions like depression and anxiety as well as conditions that affect mental health, like addiction, could all be pre-existing conditions that could impact people's access to health care. We need a safety net that is more responsive to unexpected changes in circumstances and health, and less quick to penalise people for whom, at one particular moment in time, life has become an unbearable struggle. This means the people who want to seek help are often also the ones too embarrassed to do so. This is important as early intervention can help people get back on the road to recovery more quickly and drastically improve their wellbeing.

Take the case of Faye Smith, for example.

"Children and young people face a huge range of pressures - from exams to cyberbulling, from body image to finding a job when they finish education". Everyone has mental health - it just fluctuates from positive mental health through to mental illness. This type of perspective on mental health is poisonous and dated. When we learn the facts we can help others to dispel false ideas about mental health conditions.

Mental health services in the United Kingdom are overstretched, have long waiting times and, in some regions, lack specialist services. Are you thinking about reaching out for professional help? This set of malleable social and emotional competencies and beliefs is our emotional health, and includes, amongst others, our relationship skills, our self-beliefs (more commonly referred to as self-esteem, self-worth etc.), and our self-regulation, (or the strategies we use to manage our emotions).

What do we mean when we talk about "mental health"?

If you see people who are agitated, very anxious or very depressed, I think people tend to shy away from them. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI, has made great strides in the support for and availability of help. Keep your work area tidy, and make sure that everything you need is on hand.

If you, or anyone you know, are struggling with your mental health, there are people that can help. While any such activity that distracts or grounds you can work to shift your focus to something less stressful, one of the most important things to cope in a healthy manner, something Haley Kaminski emphasized when sharing her story of mental illness with Cochrane High students. Six said they had considered or attempted suicide in the past year. Research has found that 30% of people with a long-term physical health problem also have a mental health problem and 46% of people with a mental health problem also had a long-term physical health problem.
