Activity near Jefferson Davis statue fuels speculation

Activity near Jefferson Davis statue fuels speculation”

Work crews removed the Jefferson Davis monument in less than an hour with a commanding police force in place just in case.

WWL-TV's Lauren Bale reports the bike path on the Jefferson Davis neutral ground has been closed in the area.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu posted photos on Twitter of the removal of the Jefferson Davis Monument.

"The fight that we're waging is against the city fathers who have refused to bring about genuine equality and freedom for the black people here", said Malcolm Suber of the activist organization #TakeEmDownNOLA. "It was a very robust process, but the law is the law now".

"We would have preferred it to be in the daytime", monument opponent Malcolm Suber told Kaplan-Levenson, "so everybody could see it in the light of day".

A last-ditch effort to block the removal of a monument to a Confederate general in New Orleans has landed in court. The Liberty Monument was removed last month.

Police had cordoned off the 6-foot tall bronze statue of Davis with a chain-link fence to keep protesters out.

"To literally put the Confederacy on a pedestal in some of our most prominent public places is not only an inaccurate reflection of our past, it is an affront to our present, and a bad prescription for our future".

Those who want the monuments to remain include the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which has urged its members and supporters to hold vigils at the statues to prevent their removal.

Adam Swensek, an assistant city attorney, noted court precedents holding otherwise and said delays in removing the monuments only prolong a controversy that has resulted in tense confrontations between pro- and anti-monument groups at monument sites.

Two additional monuments in the city of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard are also scheduled for relocation. The Lee statue is the most prominent of the four. But supporters of the monuments say they have new documents that were not available during the federal hearing. Davis was president of the Confederate States of America, a group of states that seceded from the US and led to the Civil War. A slave owner himself, memorials and monuments celebrating him in several states - including Texas, Virginia, Washington, and of course Louisiana - have come under fire in recent years. It was built in 1884 after 14 years of fundraisers and negotiations, the University of New Orleans says. He died in New Orleans in 1893.

The Jefferson Davis Monument is one of four monuments that critics have been pushing to have dismantled in New Orleans.
