Pakistan, Afghanistan dispute toll after clashes”

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani reportedly turned down a recent Pakistani invitation to visit Islamabad. The decision to open the border will also be made once the survey is completed, the participants decided.

The incident marked the latest round of escalation of border tensions between the two countries, which often accuse each other of sheltering terrorists who launch deadly cross- border attacks on each other's soils.

"The army and other security forces are enjoying complete support and confidence of the people of Pakistan and will continue to face future challenges with utmost dignity and integrity", he added.

He hoped that Afghan leadership will review the prevailing situation in the region.

Both sides later declared ceasefire along the Chaman border. According to officials, almost 10,000 locals have left their houses so far.

No fewer than 2,000 families from the villages were evacuated from the area out of fear that their houses might come under shelling from Afghan side.

The Pakistani and Afghan armies have been clashing at the border crossing in southwestern Baluchistan province since Friday.

The closure of border crossing has suspended all trade and business activities.

The attack triggered intense fighting with government forces that sent civilians fleeing toward the provincial capital of Kunduz.

The border is considered invalid by many Afghans and clashes along it are not uncommon.

He said Pakistan, on its part, has been taking measures for border management, but Afghanistan has taken no step in that regard. "This unwise way is not good for Afghanistan", the general asserted.

Nafees Zakaria stressed the need for resolving issues through dialogue between the two countries.

According to a USA watchdog, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR): "Casualties suffered by the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in the fight against the Taliban and other insurgents continue to be shockingly high".

While addressing a press conference the IG stated that Afghan forces infiltrated Pakistani territory and used civilians as shields. "Pakistan is a sovereign country and has a right to take measures for protecting its national security", he said.
