US test fires ballistic missile from California coastal base

US test fires ballistic missile from California coastal base”

The US Air Force test-launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from California early Wednesday, the military said.

The missile traveled some 4,200 miles (6,700 km) and went down near a Pacific Ocean atoll that is part of the Marshall Islands and features a USA military ballistic missile test site.

Air Force Global Strike Command, the Louisiana-based military organization charged with overseeing the nuclear-tipped ICBMs, said tests like Wednesday gather data on the weapon system system's accuracy and reliability. "It's efforts like these that make nuclear deterrence effective".

For the second week in a row, the United States Air Force has tested an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The U.S. has about 450 of the missiles and they are routinely tested.

Vandenberg Air Force Base successfully launched another missile test overnight.

"The tests are scheduled 3-5 years in advance, and it can take up to a year to plan and prepare for each launch", Linda Frost, a U.S. Air Force spokesperson, told Fox News.

A Minuteman III ICBM launched from Vandenberg AFB.

The new missile test by the USA came hours after President Donald Trump said that he would be "honored" to sit down for a talk with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The U.S. responded by sending warships to the area as a way to ensure North Korea does not perform another missile test, the Independent reported.

A similar test occurred April 26, a scheduling quirk after the delay of test previous year and not a response to global tensions.

The Minuteman III nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile is one of the pillars of the United States air-land-sea triad, which also includes the Ohio-class submarine and the B-52 strategic bomber.

Air Force officials said that launch was an operational test to show the country's nuclear deterrent capability.

The other test missile was launched in February.
