Suspected ISI agent Aftab Ali sent to nine-day ATS remand”

Acting on leads provided by ISI suspect Aftab Ali, arrested from UP’s Faizabad on Wednesday, the UP ATS picked up Altaf Qureshi on Wednesday night from south Mumbai’s Masjid Bunder and Javed Iqbal from Agreepada, also in Mumbai, on Thursday morning, IG UP-ATS Aseem Arun said in Lucknow.

Aftab is believed to have received training from the ISI in Pakistan and was in touch with officials in the Pakistan High Commission, the spokesman said, adding that the ATS was in possession of strong evidence against him.

Mumbai: Following the arrest of alleged ISI operatives Javed Naviwala and Altaf Qureshi, the State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) is investigations if the duo provided financial aid to any of the terror accused arrested from Mumbai or found to have been in the city since 2009. So far, three suspects of the ISI have been arrested since Wednesday. The Maharashtra ATS said they were scanning his phone records to get a clearer picture of his handlers.

Ali visited Pakistan twice since, in 2014 and 2016.

ATS arrests hawala operator for supplying terror funds

Police were questioning Qureshi to know on whose directive he had deposited the money in Aftab's account, the official said. The ATS was continuously getting reports about military information being leaked to intelligence officials in the Pakistan High Commission and the ISI, and the agency was working on it through electronic surveillance, ATS sources said. Police were able to tie the deposits to a Mumbai hawala trader Altaf Qureshi who claimed it was Naviwala who gave him the instructions. He then asked Qureshi to transfer the money. Based at Faizabad, Aftab Ali was keeping close watch on movement of forces in Lucknow and eastern Uttar Pradesh when tension had escalated along the border in Jammu & Kashmir after the surgical strike. Qureshi is a resident of Rajkot district of Gujarat and he was staying in Mumbai in rented accommodation.

The arrest was made days after intelligence agencies had warned of a possible terror attack by ISI-trained terrorists in Uttar Pradesh.
