Arkansas levees breach, 500 evacuated

Arkansas levees breach, 500 evacuated”

The levee at the Black River in Pocahontas has failed on Wednesday (May 3) according to the National Weather Service of Little Rock.

"My admonition to the public, particularly in northeast Arkansas, is to listen to the local authorities, and if they order evacuation, that you do so quickly".

More than 500 people have been evacuated, with six shelters opened for displaced residents.

"Today they have identified nine levee breaches in Randolph County alone, three of these breaches of the levees appear to be categorized as major, and this, of course, impacts the flooding in Lawrence County, which we're watching very carefully", Hutchinson said in a press conference.

"This is the most extensive flooding in an urban area that I've ever seen as governor", Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said.

The Black River reached record levels this week in parts of Arkansas and Missouri, following storms that dumped up to a foot of rain on parts of the two states last weekend. Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and IL.

The Black River is expected to crest Friday, with water that has already inundated much of Pocahontas, to continue spreading. Businesses ... homes ... and any structures will flood. Warnings were also issued urging people to stay out of floodwaters that may be contaminated by raw sewage and chemicals. The span was closed Thursday night and is in addition to a 14.5-mile stretch of river closed earlier in the week in St. Louis.

This is considered a flash flood emergency, and residents need to seek higher ground immediately.
