$1 trillion spending bill unveiled to keep government running through September

$1 trillion spending bill unveiled to keep government running through September”

The deal struck by Republican and Democratic leaders to fund the government through September 30 includes some of the increased defense spending Trump had requested but not funding for his wall along the Mexican border.

A CNN/ORC poll from March found that 72% of Americans want to see Trump to reach bipartisan compromises rather than try to pass laws he thinks are right for the country, even if they aren't supported by Democrats.

But if bipartisanship was the end result, it was a split in priorities between some Republicans on Capitol Hill and the White House that boosted Democrats' negotiating position - allowing the minority party in both chambers to come out with an increase in some domestic spending priorities and successfully withhold funding for Trump's signature border wall proposal. "He said, "Our Republican team had its own victory '" under the radar", he and called the bill "a clear win for the American people".

Budget Director Mick Mulvaney is insisting the budget deal that will keep the government running until September is a win for the White House, despite complaints from President Trump.

The agreement reached after weeks of tense negotiations, however, would allocate an additional 1.5 billion dollars for border security, which one congressional aide described as "the most robust border security increase in roughly a decade".

No money was included for Trump's proposed U.S. -Mexico border wall.

"The details of the current spending bill suggests that we're going to fund both of those priorities", Hurd said.

He sought to revive the effort last week but Ryan held off when he acknowledged he did not yet have the votes, as some Republicans remained skeptical of the revised legislation.

Trump had complained earlier Tuesday about having to work with Democrats, tweeting that, "Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!"

"The omnibus (spending bill) is in sharp contrast to President Trump's unsafe plans to steal billions from lifesaving research, instead increasing funding for the NIH (National Institutes of Health) by $2 billion", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said in a statement that nonetheless fell short of endorsing the bill outright.

Republican Representative Jim Jordan, chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said he and other conservatives likely would not back the measure because it does not fulfill their promises to voters. The Trump threat is a drastically different approach than President Barack Obama took during that time, when he warned of the disruptive effects of shuttering the government, while also attempting to pin the closure on Republican obstructionism.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the agreement is consistent with his party's principles. Then again, I guess if we are judging expectations for judicial picks based on what just happened with the budget, we could have gotten an Elena Kagan.

Sen. Joe Manchin, R-W.Va., led the fight for a $1.3 billion provision to preserve health benefits for more than 22,000 retired coal miners and their families.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly says he's "shocked" by the behavior of lawmakers who are celebrating slowing down its construction.

Trump's tweets come ahead of expected votes this week on a bipartisan budget deal to avoid a government shutdown and a possible vote in the House on a health care overhaul. And to learn more about it and the politics that go with it, we are going to talk to NPR congressional correspondent Susan Davis. He also claimed credit for $6 billion in war funding approved by former President Obama as a Trump win. Instead of a $30 billion increase in defense spending, Congress delivered a $15 billion military spending increase. And there will be funding increases for clean energy and science.
