At 100 days in, Trump seems both outsider and insider

At 100 days in, Trump seems both outsider and insider”

He also was promoting a still-to-be defined tax cut plan and the nation's strong economy, on which many of his political fortunes rest.

"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in!" And we've, believe me, started from day one.

Even as he returned to politically important Pennsylvania, Trump seemed torn between who he was courting. Trump won Pennsylvania with 48 per cent of the vote, the first time the state had voted for a Republican presidential candidate since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

In addition to speaking at the rally, Trump signed two executive orders in Harrisburg, one directing a review all USA trade agreements and the second establishing the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy. The goal is to determine whether America is being treated fairly by its trading partners and the 164-nation World Trade Organization.

Trump visited the AMES Companies in Pennsylvania's Cumberland County, a shovel manufacturer since 1774.

Rather than point to his accomplishments, Trump devoted the first ten minutes of his Saturday rally in Pennsylvania to lambasting his favorite target - the press. Democrats planned their own rally nearby.

The choice and setting of the rally - in a state that enthusiastically embraced his election - was a deliberate snub to a traditional White House correspondents' dinner taking place late Saturday, where he had risked being roasted by comedians.

Trump has checked off several promises outlined in his "Contract With the American Voter" dealing with trade, regulations and lobbying. Reagan, recuperating from a gunshot wound to the chest sustained during an assassination attempt, still delivered remarks by phone.

US President Donald Trump has listed at a raucous rally to mark his 100 days in the White House the countries he has built great relationships with - and Australia didn't receive a mention. "If the media's job is to be honest and tell the truth, the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade." he said. He said the press should also be judged for their performance in the past 100 days.

A failed effort to overhaul president Barack Obama's health care law behind him, Trump is turning to what he's billed as the nation's biggest tax cut. It apparently falls short of Reagan's in 1981, and tax experts are sceptical that the plan would pay for itself, as Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has claimed.

Declaring himself "thrilled" to be far from "the Washington swamp" and the "very boring" dinner, the president sneered at "fake news" CNN and the "failing" New York Times. Polls show that Americans feel slightly better about his job performance on that subject than his job performance overall. "It put the countries of this world on notice that the sellout of the American worker was over".

What change has Trump brought to Washington?

Presidents have traditionally been most powerful during the period since Franklin D. Roosevelt launched his "New Deal" response to the Great Depression, but Trump has faced criticism for his 100-day record. He has struggled mightily to adjust to the challenges of being president, seeming flummoxed by his inability to simply tell Congress (or the judiciary) what to do and have them immediately carry out his orders.
