Texas poised to pass 'sanctuary city' ban with jail penalty

Texas poised to pass 'sanctuary city' ban with jail penalty”

Senate Bill 4 will go up for debate tomorrow in the House.

Neave's efforts come amid a federal crackdown on sanctuary cities, with the Justice Department contacting nine cities to warn that they will lose federal funding if they refuse to comply with immigration enforcement.

This fast is her spiritual stand, she says, in opposition to an anti-"sanctuary cities" bill poised to become law in her state - and in the face of death threats criticizing her on social media. More than 1,2000 immigrant families attended a local information session in the last few weeks, and teachers in her district have said that their students are anxious their parents will be deported. Governor Greg Abbott has already vowed to sign the bill into law.

Supporters say the bill would reinforce the existing rule of law and provide consistency among the state's law enforcement agencies. "Their second grade students are afraid of what is going to happen to them if their parents are deported".

State Sen. Charles Perry, a Republican who sponsored SB4, told NBC News that the bill would put all of the state on the same page and ensure, "those who engage in criminal activity are not released back on our streets".

"What else can I do to defeat this bill?" she said.

"We protect victims and witnesses of crime in Senate Bill 4 to make sure no one is hindered from reporting crime", he added.

In a separate demonstration, as many as 750 immigrant detainees in Tacoma, Washington, launched a hunger strike earlier this month to protest conditions at the 1,500-bed Northwest Detention Center.

The bill has been softened slightly in the Texas House, but Neave doesn't sound optimistic about preventing it's passing, telling the Morning News, "At this point, we're hoping for a miracle".

Her fast, she said, was inspired by the hunger strikes of civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.

The fear is one that Neave understands intimately, as her father came to the United States as an undocumented immigrant.

"I feel fine. I feel healthy, and I'm going to pray", said Neave.
