False reports of gunshots cause chaos at Penn Station, Macy's”

Amtrak police used a Taser on a man inside Pennsylvania Station late Friday afternoon, sparking chaos and mass hysteria among waiting crowds who thought they heard a gunshot.

What began as long delays at Pennsylvania Station in NY turned into a nightmare on Friday after a false report of shots fired caused a stampede.

The panic began when Amtrak Police tasered two men in an attempt to detain them for disobeying orders, WABC reported.

Sources tell CBS2 a law enforcement agency used a Taser on a suspect, which people may have mistaken for the sound of a gunshot.

People pushed each others to escape the underground station following false reports of gunfire.

Videos of the terrifying event quickly spread online detailing both the stampede and the aftermath that showed abandoned belongings thrown everywhere in sight and a cacophony of people on cell phones calling loved ones and crying out in shock. "But at the same time we now have to correct for the anxiety and the apprehension because people can get hurt by just the panic and the overreaction".

Police said reports that shots were fired at the station are not true.

Clothing, food, books and even golf clubs, phones and laptops littered the Amtrak area in the station moments after people fled.

The station was already crowded due to a NJ Transit train that had stalled in a tunnel earlier, prompting massive delays during the evening rush hour.

A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman says the train finally reached Penn Station just before 6 p.m.

Brian Scheckner, who claimed to be on the disabled train, said he and fellow passengers were stuck for almost three hours.

"I walked into a building in the middle of the street and sat it out".
