Uber Aims For Flying Car Test In 2020

Uber Aims For Flying Car Test In 2020”

Uber plans to turn a flight of fantasy into reality, announcing Tuesday it will offer a flying taxi service in Dallas-Fort Worth and Dubai by 2020.

The move comes as interest in futuristic flying cars is growing in Silicon Valley and around the world, with advocates promising the vehicles will cut commute times and ease road congestion.

"We actually get to live in this era of flying cars", Jeff Holden, Uber's chief product officer, said today at the first-ever Uber Elevate Summit in Dallas.

According to Holden's keynote speech, Uber plans to begin flying these vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles in cooperation with the cities of Dallas and Dubai by 2020. Mr Holden said the firm is targeting long-term pricing that is competitive with its current fees for hailing an Uber vehicle. Uber has been piloting self-driving cars in cities across the USA but has run into regulatory difficulties, a hurdle it's also certain to face with flying vehicles.

Uber has long positioned its service as a way to help address these issues - rather than someone taking their own vehicle out, they can utilize the service of an Uber auto which can transport many people to their destinations in a single day. We haven't even nailed down self-driving cars yet, and now the buzz is all about flying cars. The paper sketched out a future filled with on-demand air transportation that would shorten a two-hour San Jose to San Francisco drive to a 15-minute VTOL breeze.

In a press release, the transportation network company says it's partnered with a variety of manufacturers that will help Uber build a feasible VTOL system.

Uber says the cost of a VTOL could eventually be as low as $1.32 a mile, in line with the current rate of an UberX auto. Uber is also in collaboration with businesses that the company needs to develop VTOL vehicles and charging stations.

Uber has grown into the world's largest venture-backed startup, with a valuation estimated at some $68 billion despite ongoing obstacles with regulators and taxi operators. It's also going to work with experienced aircraft manufacturers who are already developing VTOL vehicles, the companies include the likes of Bell Helicopter and Embraer.

"Several areas still need further research and development", he wrote, "particularly the operational aspects of making sure the automation that will "fly" the autonomous aircraft is safe, and how the automation will interact with the air traffic control system".

Uber says the mayors of Dallas and Forth Worth support the idea of an Uber Elevate Network pilot program.

Uber announced plans to develop the aircraft previous year.
