Google Unveils 17-Camera VR Video Rig”

It remains to be seen if the YI HALO will suffer the same exclusivity concerns, but with more than one option available to use Google's Jump Assembler tech at least there's some choice. The product's hefty price tag may scare away some creators, but Google wants to get its latest toy in the hands of its creative community. The company will take applications from filmmakers to receive access to a Jump camera rig and unlimited use of the Google's Jump Assembler cloud service. It's a monster camera rig content creators will flock instantly to.

Google has tied up with GoPro rival Yi to introduce the Yi Halo VR camera.

In a blog post on Monday, April 24, Google made the announcement about the Yi Halo as well as the Jump Start program for virtual reality filmmakers.

Google introduced Jump nearly two years ago at its annual developer conference as a 360-degree platform that combined a multi-camera rig and specialized software that stitches it all together. Now the Xiaomi-backed Yi is expanding into the world of VR and 360-degree video with two new cameras being announced at the NAB conference in Las Vegas. The cameras stitch the videos of each of the connected modules to create an 8K x 8K resolution by 30 frames per second. The entire rig weighs less than eight pounds. True the Halo is the company's first foray into the hotly contested 360-degree VR camera segment, however, things look to be pretty much solid with the new Halo. There's Nokia's $40,000 Ozo camera, Facebook's x6 and x24 rigs, GoPro's Fusion for 5.2K action footage and now the Halo.

There is an integrated control unit apart from the Android app

Google jumped into the hot new VR camera segment with the launch of the Halo 360-degree camera.

The camera, being manufactured by Yi, combines 16 spherically aligned 4K action cameras with an extra camera facing upwards.

There is a touch-screen control panel on the Yi Halo itself, but there's also an Android app. It has a 100-minute battery life, pulling only 50 watts, but also works with AC and alternative power sources. Under Jump Start, Google will provide some filmmakers with the camera for free (to use), as well as the Jump Assembler that produces the virtual reality footage. YI HALO meets even professional VR creators' and filmmakers' most challenging demands.
