Patriots unlikely to trade Malcolm Butler to Saints

Patriots unlikely to trade Malcolm Butler to Saints”

With the NFL Draft just a few days away, there have been plenty of New England Patriots rumors about what will happen with two key pieces.

The New England Patriots could opt to hold on to Butler this season, pairing him with big-time free agent signing Stephon Gilmore.

According to Schefter's report, Butler had been hoping to sign an offer sheet with another team and had visited with the New Orleans Saints. Under different circumstances, perhaps the Saints would fork over a first-round draft pick and sign a blank check. The Patriots were able to re-sign Hightower to a four-year contract while placing the first round tender on Butler.

The Patriots now do not pick until No. 72 after trading away their first- and second-round selections, including sending No. 32 overall to the Saints in the Brandin Cooks deal.

Butler has played in 43 regular-season games with 33 starts, including starting all 16 games in each of the last two seasons for the Patriots. In fact, our own Dan Kadar's latest mock draft has the Saints using their No. 32 pick on LSU cornerback Tre'Davious White.

According to King's source, the Saints believe there are plenty of players who will be available in the first three rounds (they also have the 76th overall pick) and are capable of making an immediate impact.

The Saints don't seem willing to part with any of their top picks to acquire Butler. Meliwonfu was a surprise at the NFL Combine last month and is expected to be drafted somewhere in the late-first or early-second round. This is how the current CBA more or less did away with contract holdouts.
