1st tropical depression of season forms far from land”

The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Arlene, which formed Thursday, has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (72 kph).

Arlene is only the second April tropical storm to develop since the birth of the weather satellite era.

NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured a visible image of Tropical Storm Arlene on April 21 at 1145 UTC (7:45 a.m. EDT). Calendar hurricane season runs from June through November.

Last year, Hurricane Alex formed in the mid-Atlantic in January, making landfall in the Azores as a tropical storm, CNN said.

A few meteorologists, however, expect this season to be more active than normal with one, Global Weather Oscillations, saying it could be the most active since 2005 when five hurricanes hit the United States.

It is unlikely that Sub-Tropical Depression One is going to cause any revision of the forecasts. Ana began as a subtropical storm on April 20, 2003, and soon gained full tropical characteristics. On Friday, the Hurricane Center predicts it to get absorbed by a nearby nontropical storm and dissipate.

While a subtropical storm shares some features with the more familiar tropical systems, there are some key differences. The tropical storm evolved from a subtropical depression after it developed a weak but warm core.

The system would be named Arlene if it reaches tropical storm force, which isn't expected as it moves northwest at 14 mph about 730 miles west of the Azores.

In fact there were two just previous year. It gained further steam by Thursday afternoon and became Tropical Storm Arlene. Changing sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic could also influence storm formation.

Can tropical systems influence the spread of the Zika virus? Convection happens further away from the centre of the system than in a tropical storm. This story does not necessarily represent the position of our parent company, IBM.
