Trump credits himself for Georgia runoff | Cap on charitable tax deductions eyed

In the primary on Tuesday, Democrat Jon Ossoff won the most votes, with 48 percent, but fell just short of the 50 percent necessary to win outright.

He issued a statement after the results were announced: "No matter what the outcome is tonight, whether we take it all or we fight on, we have defied the odds, we have shattered expectations".

"It's a test case for how far a Democratic candidate can go in a Republican district on the strength of opposition to Trump", said Todd Rehm, a Georgia Republican strategist who is not affiliated with any candidate in the race.

Outside groups poured millions into the nationally-watched contest, which was widely viewed as an early indicator of Trump's popularity as he closed out his first 100 days in office.

The early returns of a special House election in Georgia looked strong for Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff on Tuesday night, but the race remained too close to call as more GOP-leaning precincts were yet to be counted. Republicans have controlled the seat for decades, but Trump only won it by 1 percentage point in last November's presidential election.

Now, after forcing the front-runner into a June 20 runoff, Republicans are vowing to unite and defeat the Democrats' chosen candidate in two months. "At its core, the 6th is still a 60 percent Republican district".

The victor will succeed Republican Tom Price, who resigned the seat to join Trump's administration as health secretary.

"We know that this is an important race, and it's going to stay in the hands of a Republican", Handel told CNN.

Spicer noted that the reason why President Donald Trump won was the Republican Party had already made significant headway with the shifting demographics of the country. The district is a longtime Republican stronghold-a Democrat hasn't represented Georgia's 6th since before the current leading democratic candidate was born. Before Price held the seat it was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's, who at one point was the only Republican in the state's House delegation. Will he go to Georgia to get out the vote?

RedState's Jay Caruso, a Georgia resident who lives near the sixth district, says that Ossoff's only shot at victory was last night-and he failed.

But Trump's sharp-elbowed cultural worldview and provocative rhetoric helped Hillary Clinton make serious inroads in a place populated by wealthy, well-educated white voters, many of whom defected en masse from the GOP leader's ticket a year ago. If he falls short of the threshold he needs, he'll progress to a runoff election between himself and the next-highest finisher on June 20th.
