Huge iceberg towers over Canadian town

Huge iceberg towers over Canadian town”

The light blue behemoth has become a tourist attraction in recent days, as locals from across Newfoundland sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic for a chance to snap photos of the glacial giant.

In the latest edition of "Just Canada Things", a large iceberg made its way to Canada's "Iceberg Alley" over the weekend, giving Newfoundland tourists and residents alike a show of ecological beauty.

The massive ice mountain is visible from the shore in Ferryland on the Canadian east coast.

"The opportunity to get a good picture without actually going out in a boat is right here", Kavanagh said.

A towering iceberg stationed off Newfoundland's east coast is drawing dozens of people to the small shoreline community sitting in its shadow. He added that it was the biggest one he had seen around the area so far and was hopeful that more would follow soon.

Kavanagh said he's hearing that the wind could pick up and that could mean more icebergs brushing by his town.

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said it is possible climate change is leading to more icebergs in the shipping lanes, but wind patterns are also important.

The area is also known as "Iceberg Alley".

Gabrielle McGrath, a USA coast guard commander, said that a series of storms had caused more icebergs to break off than usual.

Canadian press reported that there had already been more icebergs than normal - with 616 already having moved into the North Atlantic shipping lanes compared to 687 by the late-September season's end past year.

In the waters close to where the Titanic went down in 1912, the icebergs are forcing ships to take precautions.
