Statement: US national security adviser arrives s Kabul”

Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani met with US National Security Adviser Herbert McMaster to discuss issues related to security and counterterrorism, Ghani's office said Sunday.

McMaster expressed appreciation for Pakistan's democratic and economic development, and stressed the need to confront terrorism in all its forms, according to a statement from the USA embassy in Islamabad. In reiterating Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's vision of a peaceful neighborhood and commitment to dialogue and engagement, the Adviser apprised the visiting delegation of the steps taken by Pakistan to reach out to both India and Afghanistan.

It also said Sharif would welcome US mediation in Pakistan's disputes with India. "And we'll be prepared to execute whatever decision he makes", he said.

Expressing Pakistan's concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, Aziz reaffirmed Islamabad's commitment to working with the worldwide community to support peace efforts in Afghanistan.

On Thursday the United States military in Afghanistan dropped its GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, dubbed the "Mother of All Bombs" in combat for the first time on ISIS hideouts, killing up to 95 terrorists.

"As all of us have hoped for many many years, we have hoped that Pakistani leaders will understand that it is in their interest to go after these groups less selectively than they have in the past and the best way to pursue their interest in Afghanistan and elsewhere is through diplomacy not through the use of proxies that engage in violence", Mr McMaster said in an interview with Afghanistan's Tolo News Sunday.

Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan and the U.S. have been close friends over decades and that a continued strong partnership remained critical to promoting peace and stability in the wider region.

The meeting was also attended by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Aziz, Fatemi, Janjua, and other senior officials.

India has already rejected any role for the USA in mediating between New Delhi and Islamabad.

The Dawn quoted Aziz, as saying that that Pakistan remains determined to continue its fight as part of the National Action Plan until terrorism is completely eliminated from the country. Conveying Pakistan's concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, Sartaj reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to work with the global community to support efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
