Shark Kills Teen Surfing With Family Off Western Australia's Coast”

The victim, 17, was surfing at Kelp Beds in Wylie Bay Beach when she was attacked, Sky News Australia reported.

A 17-year-old girl has died following a shark attack near Esperance on the south-western coast of Western Australia.

West Australian police on Monday afternoon confirmed a female patient was being treated on the beach at Bandy Creek.

The coastline is reportedly known for great white shark sightings.

Sky News said one of the girl's legs was badly mauled by the shark and she had lost a lot of blood by the time she was taken away by ambulance. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police have not said what type of shark was responsible.

Last year, two people were killed by sharks in Western Australia, The Australian newspaper said.

Local authorities have closed Wylie Bay beach until further notice and surfers have been advised to avoid the area for the next 48 hours.

In the same area as this latest incident in Wylie Bay, Sean Pollard lost his left arm and right hand in a shark attack in October 2014.

A medium great white shark was seen 150 metres off shore on Tuesday in Two Mile Beach in Hopetoun. Australia has an average of less than two deadly shark attacks per year.
